This practical session will guide you step-by-step through the process of creating a very simple (yet elegant) calling card website on Coventry.domains.

What are the benefits?

Making a Calling Card site

Samples of the calling card pre-built sites we can offer you from Coventry.domains

Before we start making course sites or a blogging site, we will create a simple landing page or calling card site for yourself, something that can be a quick overview of you, your work, the kind of URL you might put in your business card or email footer.

Meet Your Cpanel

Log into your account at https://coventry.domains/

From the cpanel look for the WordPress icon. When you are done looking at it, click it!

The first screen is just an overview of WordPress, next click “Install this Application”. The options for Location determine where in your domain this new site will go. If this is a new account, delete the words “blog” under Directory — this new site will sit at the entrance to our domain, in this case http://alanlevineetal.coventry.domains/ (if you already have a site there, enter the name for a subdirectory to add this calling card, like me or card to add the new site at http://alanlevineetal.coventry.domains/me/ (or see below for adding a subdomain).

Scroll down to Version — what you will find here are some options for some pre-built WordPress sites that already have themes and demo content for you to start from. Choose one of the Calling Card options (see links for examples):

You can enter the blog title in the installer also; it can also be modified in WordPress. Leave the default username and password for the site- it is secure and you will be able to login as you will see soon in one click.

When the installer is done, your new site should be listed in your Applications; the first link lets you see the site as a visitor will see it; the second link is the one that logs you in to the dashboard to edit the site.

After the session you will have created your first website using Coventry.domains and developed the basic knowledge on how the system works.

Who should attend?

In the workshop we will review the steps for modifying theme; if you return to this site later, use one the theme documentation links above.

Let’s see how much you can customize your calling card site. You might even notice that this event’s web site is made from the WP-Big Picture theme.

A Second Site!

The idea of a domain is we can hoist many sites. You have two options for placing your sites, either as subdirectories of your domain, like:

In this case, if it is a site installed from cpanel, just put the directory name in the option you left blank above.

But you can also create sites like:

To do this, you first must create a placeholder… in your cpanel, scroll to the Domains section and click the icon for subdomains

Enter the name you wish to put to the left side of your domain, and click Create

Now when you are installing WordPress, this is a new option under the Domains menu to put a new site (remember to delete the “blog” from Directory):

For this second site, choose the Version option for a Clean WordPress Install so you can see what starting with a blank WordPress site is like.

What will you do with this site? See “Sky is the limit”!
